Strawberry Dump Cake

Prep Time: 10 Minutes / Cook Time: 30 Minutes
Serves up to 8 adults

1 Yellow or White Cake Mix

1 3oz. Package Strawberry Jell-O

2 lbs Strawberries Fresh or Frozen

½ Cup Sugar

1 1/2 Cup Water

4 Tbsp Butter


Home Preparations: cut up ½ stick butter into small cubes and put in an airtight container.

Measure out your sugar and put it in it’s own container.

Then, Cut the strawberries in ¼-1/2” slices or pieces, how you cut them isn’t all that important.


Guide’s Tip: I usually keep butter & sugar in the kitchen kit just to have them available.

So it saves you a little bit of prep time on recipes like this.


Camp Cooking: This recipe is pretty easy if you keep a pretty close eye on the dutch oven.


First, put the strawberries in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Mix the sugar and jello mix together and

sprinkle evenly over the strawberries & add the water.


Next, Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over top of that, taking care to cover everything evenly.

Now, place the butter cubes. Space them evenly across the top of the cake mix.

After this assembly the cake is ready to cook.


Before putting your Dutch-oven on the fire, it is important to make sure that you have enough coals. I placed my oven on top of a thin bed of coals and placed more coals around and on top of the lid. While it cooked, I rotated the oven every 3-5 minutes and checked on what was going on inside every 7-10 minutes.


Once the cake has cooked for about 20 minutes, the cake should be almost done. At this point you need to watch the liquid bubbling on the edges of the oven. The strawberries will cook down and start to look thick. That’s when you know it’s done. Cooking shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes.


Guide’s tip: Having a pair of large stainless-steel tongs makes moving and placing coals much easier. I rotated coals in and out of the fire on the side to keep hot coals on top and around my Dutch oven.

Also, try making freezer bag ice cream to serve with this!
